Enter The Asylum
The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, constructed between 1858 and 1881, is the largest hand-cut stone building in the western hemisphere. This haunting Gothic structure was the end of the line for West Virginia's insane for 150 years. There are nine acres of wards crowned by a looming 200 foot clock tower. The asylum's massive walls hold terrifying tales of civil war raids, arson, abuse, murder and suicide.
